Breath & Dust
a Photo Essay
By Kathleen Eady
“Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being” - Genesis 2:7
Creation is a messy process to try to understand. The opening chapters of Genesis start with the creation of the universe and everything that inhabits the universe, including humans from dust. These opening verses are a beautiful account of a loving God creating beautiful things. We can get so caught up with trying to understand exactly how the earth was created that we lose sight of the beauty that is found in such a mystery. These images were my attempt at reflecting on the mystery of creation.
I found inspiration in the Hebrew word “rûach” which is the word that is used for wind, breath and Spirit. In the creation account, we read that God breathed life into the nostrils of the first human. God’s breath or Spirit is something that we cannot fully see or even understand. While we might not be able to see the Holy Spirit, we can see small glimpses of it. For example, while we cannot see the wind, we can see fluttering leaves on a tree, a result of the wind’s presence. Maybe if we look closely at ourselves and others around us, we can then too begin to see evidence of God’s spirit within, and working among us.
