God and Nature Summer 2022
By David Campbell
He came in the fullness of time, the glorious Son of old,
Who came to save His own from sin, by prophets long foretold.
“Peace on the earth, goodwill to those who please the heavenly King!”
The angels thus proclaimed His birth and made the heavens ring.
The shepherds ran to see the sight: the heir to David’s throne.
Yet poorly clad and meanly housed--no place to call His own.
The One by whom the universe and all things in it were made
Became a helpless, needy child, within a manger laid.
For thus He came as one of us and took on our estate,
To save us from the grasp of sin and our deserved fate.
But we thought Him accursed, despised, and turned to face away.
It was our curse we saw on Him; He came our debt to pay.
Now by God’s grace we may be turned from our own selfish ways,
To love and serve as He loved us, to trust Him all our days.
The humble One who died for us is now our risen King.
Proclaim Him now to all the earth, that all His praise may sing!
David Campbell learned from an early age to appreciate God and His creation (especially mollusks) from his parents. This led to degrees in biology and geology, focused on evolution and systematics. He is currently an associate professor and chair of the Department of Natural Sciences at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC. He and his family are currently members of Providence Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg, SC. His son presented research on fossil mollusks at the recent ASA meeting this summer.
