God and Nature Winter 2021
By Randy Isaac
Since 1949, the primary communication method in the ASA for issues of science and faith was the Journal of the American Scientific Affiliation. Renamed Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith in September 1986, this quarterly peer-reviewed journal continues to be one of the premier publication on science and faith. But many readers, while appreciating its scholarly and professional quality, longed for another magazine that was easier to read and written as a more accessible resource for a wider audience. Tom Burnett stepped up to the plate and on December 21, 2010, wrote the first post on a WordPress blog that would eventually become God and Nature.
When Emily Ruppel joined the ASA in 2011 as the assistant director for communications, one of her assignments was to develop this blog into just such a resource for an enjoyable fireside read. Emily, working on her Masters in Science Communications at MIT, was intrigued with the idea. A few months later she revealed an artistic Weebly version named God & Nature. She reached out to a wide variety of potential authors, soliciting various forms of submissions from short prose to poetry or artwork. The Winter 2012 issue premiered what has become a cherished source of informative and enjoyable expression of science and Christian faith.
*For the first year of God and Nature, Randy Isaac, then the Executive Director of the ASA contributed a regular column called Director's Corner.
