As was the case back then (and still may be),
our teacher had been given no small task:
“Instruct the rudiments of gym and health.”
Selecting me was natural that fateful day:
a fourth grade boy first made aware of girls—and dinosaurs.
The blood, unsummoned, rushed to neck and cheeks.
I might have made a sideways glance,
perhaps had bowed my head a bit.
 
“Are humans plants or animals?”
Those deep-set eyes met mine
and chanced that I would be the one
to show to all the world
with my exploding heart
that I had kept the Faith,
that I had saved my never-dying soul.

Eugene Lemcio, Emeritus Professor of New Testament at Seattle Pacific University, taught there for thirty-six years. He earned an M.Div. from Asbury Theological Seminary and a doctorate from Cambridge University (Trinity College). Gene began his academic career at Houghton College with a B.S. in zoology (and a minor in chemistry).
