God and Nature Summer 2021
By Lowell H. Hall
Each time I see the butterfly
flutter by
color in motion
each like others
in the long long line
generation upon generation
to be succeeded by another
to flutter by
that butterfly
it’s pure delight.
Down the garden path it leads me
to behold another vision
the daffiodillidae
standing in stentorian array
stately yellow and green row on row
last year as this
the promise of the next
generation upon generation
to be known in the present
by the image from the past.
Among the bushes
the chicky dee
where seeds abound
black and white on wing
quick to perch quick to fly
to flit about yet keep the nest
generation upon generation
kept by quick eye
passing on the path to flight.
Against the fence
humming birds hover
among red salvia
not landing
yet in contact
gathering for the present
providing for the future
generation upon generation
hovering persists
identity seen and known.
In darkening eventide
fireflies come
lightning bugs with little lanterns
light the landscape
blinking blinking
signaling to be known
generation upon generation
though life be fleeting
another comes who lights the way.
Generation upon generation
the golden thread
connecting connecting.
I sing of today
its joys
its blessings
my garden creature friends.
I will sing of tomorrow
of family and friends
of those whom I love.
I have my own voice
To keep on singing
Singing singing
With great hope in my heart.
Among the triumphs and the woes of these days
family and friends and strangers alike
contribute
to the path
that I have chosen
for the good or ill
Generation upon generation
I hope to be a person who is said of me,
he reflected the Savior’s light
upon the way
connecting connecting
for those who love his neighbor as he loves himself
family, friends and strangers
all alike.
